Amber Heard is set to make her return to the DC Universe as Mera later this year in Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom. A new comic book variant cover gives fans their first look at the Princess of Xebel.
Variant covers have long been used to showcase the artwork of other mediums, even if they’re unrelated to the comic. The newest example of this comes from an upcoming variant cover for Birds of Prey #4 which showcases artwork from Sun Khamunaki based on Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom. The art gives fans a new look at Jason Momoa’s costume as Arthur Curry as well as their first look at Amber Heard as Mera in the film:
Both Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Amber Heard’s Mera appear to be sporting the same costumes from the first film. Given Momoa is already confirmed to be wearing a stealth suit in Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom, it’s likely fans will be seeing their new costumes closer to release. Regardless, this beautiful variant cover by Sun Khamunaki honors the classic costume of the DC Universe’s King and Queen of the Seas.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
