The Barbie movie featured a quick jab at Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League during its third act. When asked if she was worried about the fanbase’s reaction, Barbie director Greta Gerwig admitted she didn’t realize there would be people upset about it.
Barbie has garnered a lot of hate on social media despite its overwhelming success. The film is unabashedly feminist and takes shots at almost every toxic element of masculinity people could think of, which includes a quick jab about Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League by one of the Barbies. This immediately led to backlash from certain Snyder Fans on social media. When asked if she was prepared for the hate stemming from the Snyder cut joke, director Greta Gerwig admitted she had no idea how passionate people were about the project:
“I didn’t even really realize that,” Gerwig told ComicBook.com. “I didn’t even… Because I don’t have a dog in this fight, I didn’t even really know, I knew it was a thing. I don’t know the contours of all the ins and outs. But it’s the kind of thing that I vaguely know. But I think that was the thing, that it was like if [Writer Barbie] had a vague knowledge of, and then all of a sudden in a certain state, it really meant a lot to her, and then it went away.”
It’s entirely understandable, if someone is outside the comic book space, to not know what the Snyder cut movement was at all. Despite being very vocal, fans of Zack Snyder’s Justice League are a subsection of the population. While the joke in Barbie certainly landed with general audiences as a jab at the fans, it’s entirely understandable Greta Gerwig didn’t realize how passionate they were, even if the reaction of some members of the group made the joke funnier in retrospect.
The SnyderVerse era is over for now
The term “SnyderVerse” refers to the interconnected film universe that Zack Snyder created, which began with Man of Steel and continued with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. Those plans have been scrapped in favor of an interconnected DC Universe consisting of film, television, animation, and video game projects, with James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm.
Despite its mixed reception, the SnyderVerse has a dedicated fanbase that appreciates Zack Snyder’s DC Universe vision. Fans have praised the SnyderVerse films for their darker tone and mature storytelling. They have also criticized Warner Bros. and DC’s interference with Snyder’s DCU plans, which they believe resulted in the lackluster final product of Justice League.
In 2021, Zack Snyder released his four-hour long Justice League cut on the WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max. His version of Justice League was well received by fans and critics alike, who praised its improvement over the original version of the movie, which was overseen by Joss Whedon. The release of the Snyder Cut has reignited interest in the SnyderVerse and sparked speculation about its future.
