Back in 2020, it was announced that Haunted Mansion director Justin Simien would be the showrunner for an upcoming Lando Disney Plus series. It was recently revealed that Donald Glover and his brother Stephen Glover would be brought on as the new showrunners for the Star Wars series, coming as a surprise to both fans and Simien himself.
Justin Simien recently spoke out during a recent interview for The Haunted Mansion that he had been left just as much in the dark about the Lando Disney Plus series as fans despite supposedly being the showrunner. This non-update came with a sting of irony when it was announced that Donald Glover and Stephen Glover would be taking over as the writers of the Star Wars series, with Simien revealing he found out about his replacement on social media:
It’s unlikely Donald Glover and Stephen Glover’s version of Lando is any closer to happening than The Haunted Mansion director’s. With the ongoing WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike, no work can be done on the series, regardless of if Justin Simien was the showrunner. It’s unclear when this Star Wars Disney Plus series will release, but fans can only hope they won’t have to wait TOO much longer.
The future of Star Wars looks brighter than ever
During Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm made some exciting announcements for the future of the franchise. At the event, Kathleen Kennedy announced that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Dave Filoni and James Mangold are all set to direct their own Star Wars movies. Details about the projects are still scarce, but each one is set during a different time period in the galaxy far, far away.
The announcement of these three new Star Wars movies marks an exciting time for fans of the franchise. With each movie being directed by a different filmmaker, there is sure to be a unique perspective and style brought to each project.
