RuPaul has revealed his next project: A memoir.
The queer icon, producer and host of RuPaul’s Drag Race will release The House of Hidden Meanings on March 4, 2024 through HarperCollins, he announced on Instagram Wednesday morning.
“After two and a half years, it’s finally here: My memoir,” Paul, said in a brief video (below) accompanying the memoir release date reveal. “I’m so excited and so anxious at the same time, because I really reveal so much of myself. You know, this world today. It feels so hostile and such a scary place to be vulnerable in. But I did it, so get ready.”
Described by the publisher as a self-portrait of the international drag superstar and pop culture icon, the memoir will trace RuPaul’s experiences growing up as a Black, poor and queer person who discovers the power of performance, alongside found family and self-acceptance.
In revealing his philosophy for living — the value of chosen family, harnessing what makes you different and the transformation power of facing yourself — the book doubles as a “manual for living.”
The House of Hidden Meanings promises to peel back on the “chameleonic adaptability” that has made RuPaul “enigmatic to the public,” in an accounting and recounting that strips him bare, allowing the drag legend and culture shifter to make himself truly known.
The complex relationships with his absent father and temperamental mother; how he forged an identity in Atlanta and New York’s punk and drag scenes; and finding both love and sobriety are among the topics RuPaul will address.
“Writing this book left me gooped, gagged and stripped raw,” he added in the video’s caption.
“I’ve learned that vulnerability is strength, but so far, all I feel is nervous as hell, yet super excited to share it with y’all. When all is said and done, it’s just me, Ru.”
This is the latest book title from the Emmy, Grammy and Tony-winning artist. He previously published Lettin It All Hang Out: An Autobiography with Hyperion in 1995, followed by Workin’ It! RuPaul’s Guide to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Style in 2010 and 2018’s GuRu.
