Christopher Nolan’s newest film Oppenheimer is set to hit theaters in just a few days. During a recent interview, the auteur director revealed whether he’d be interested in helming another superhero film following his Batman trilogy with The Dark Knight.
Christopher Nolan is a name that needs no introduction in film circles. He’s made a name for himself with some of the best movies of the past two decades, from Memento to the upcoming Oppenheimer. This includes his critically acclaimed Batman trilogy, with The Dark Knight being widely considered the best superhero movie of all time. When asked during a recent interview with HugoDécrypte if he would return to the world of superhero films, Nolan simply answered “No.”
It’s no shock Christopher Nolan has opted to stay away from superhero films given how big of expectations he would have to meet following The Dark Knight. It’s also likely, given Batman is one of the biggest characters in fiction, Nolan simply isn’t familiar with any other characters enough to make a film that captures the heart of their story. While he certainly could do research like he did for Oppenheimer, it’s clear Nolan is content leaving Batman and the rest of the world of capes in the past.
The future of the Batman series
The first movie ended with Batman apprehending the Riddler, who has flooded Gotham City, though details about Part II are currently scarce. Matt Reeves is co-writing the script of the sequel with Mattson Tomlin.
The heads of DC Studios recently revealed that The Batman: Part II is set to hit theaters on October 2025. The first movie earned $770.8 million at the worldwide box office, a figure that makes it the seventh highest-grossing movie of 2022.
