The Marvels is set to be a story of sisterhood between characters like Monica Rambeau and Carol Danvers. However, according to director Nia DaCosta, the film will address a long-standing grudge Monica has had with Captain Marvel.

Many fans expect The Marvels to be a happy reunion between Monica Rambeau and Carol Danvers, given Carol was essentially Monica’s aunt in Captain Marvel. Yet life is rarely so simple. Nia DaCosta, who serves as the film’s director, teases an animosity between the two stemming from the loss of Monica’s mother:

“For a child to lose their aunt, and then to lose their mother – although she wasn’t a child when her mother passed away – [she’s left to] feel like she has no family,” DaCosta told Total Film Magazine. “But then to see that her aunt has been popping to Earth every now and then, and off in space doing [stuff] for a bunch of other people and also not being able to reconcile any of that because she’s never around — that can really create a wound. Monica definitely has a wound that she finally gets to address in this film.”

It’s certainly understandable that Monica Rambeau would feel abandoned by Carol Danvers given her 30-year absence since the events of Captain Marvel. Especially given the trauma of The Blip and the events of Wandavision, it’s certain to be an emotional reunion between the two once The Marvels hits theaters.

The talent behind The Marvels

The Marvels is set to be a groundbreaking film in many ways. Not only does it feature three powerful female superheroes, but it also has a female director, Nia DaCosta, who previously directed the horror flick Candyman. The movie features a cast that includes Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff, and Mohan Kapur.

“She has a really calm vibe, too,” Iman Vellani said about DaCosta. “These movies are not easy to make at all. There’s like a million, bajillion little moving pieces. She and [executive producer] Mary [Livanos] did such a great job to keep morale high. Even if there were days where they wanted to rip people’s heads off, they would never show it and never put their stress on anyone else.”

In addition to directing The Marvels, Nia DaCosta also co-wrote the script alongside Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik, and Zeb Wells. During an interview, DaCosta described the movie as being “full comic book madness,” teasing what audiences can expect from the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe project.
