Exclusive footage from the upcoming X-Men ’97 series on Disney Plus was shown during San Diego Comic-Con. Descriptions of the footage tease major status quo changes for the series.
Fans have been awaiting any news about X-Men ’97 since it was announced, with no new footage having been released to the public in nearly two years. According to MyCosmicCircus on Twitter, the footage at San Diego Comic-Con featured the X-Men interrogating the antagonist Dr. Trask before Jean Grey uses Cerebro to enter his mind, perhaps hinting at a more morally grey X-Men team than fans have seen before.
The second description of the San Diego Comic-Con footage is far more interesting, however. According to CBR, the footage featured “Master Mold, a pregnant Jean Grey, Archangel and Bishop as official members of the team”. It’s unclear if they meant Master Mold would be joining the team in X-Men ’97 or if it was simply revealed in addition to Archangel and Bishop joining the team. However, Jean Grey being pregnant in a world of Sentinels may hint that Rachel Summers, her daughter from the Days of Future Past timeline will play a role in the series. Though if Jean will give birth in the series is yet to be seen.
What can fans expect from X-Men ’97?
The final episode of the original series saw the X-Men saying goodbye to Charles Xavier as he left with Lilandra to visit the Shi’Ar homeworld. X-Men ’97 will pick up where the original series left off and promises to feature some of the most iconic villains from the X-Men universe, including Mister Sinister, Emma Frost, Sebastian Shaw, Callisto and Valerie Cooper.
Fans can look forward to the return of some of their favorite voice actors from the original series, including Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Adrian Hough, Christopher Britton, Catherine Disher, Chris Potter, Alison Sealy-Smith, and Alyson Court. In addition, X-Men ’97 will include the voice talents of Jennifer Hale, Anniwaa Buachie, Ray Chase, Matthew Waterson, JP Karliak, Holly Chou, Jeff Bennett and AJ LoCascio.
X-Men ’97 was originally slated to premiere in the fall of 2022, but has been pushed back with no official release date. With Marvel reducing its Disney Plus output, X-Men ’97 is now expected to debut sometime in 2024.
